The Social Life of Bacteria: From Physics to Complex Organization

Prof. Dr. Eshel Ben Jacob
(Tel Aviv University, Israel)

October 10, 2006

Abstract:

Eons before we cam e into existence, bacteria already invented most of the features that we immediately think of when asked to distinguish life from artificial systems as reflected by their colonial artistic patterns.

Could it be, then, that natural intelligence has been invented by bacteria and that our social intelligence is an evolution improved version of bacterial collective intelligence? If so, perhaps we can learn from bacteria about ourselves.
